still merchandising?

exactly my point. Is 'ol Jorge still merchandising? Games, figures...etc....All that stuff is allright, but we're in it for the books. The books are what make it valuable. I would understand that he wants a hand in the production of all that, but really...his job is to write. It makes one worry about the forthcoming novels.

History of Westeros and more . . .

. . . according to Wikipedia

The rough timeline here is given in relation to Aegon's Landing, using negative numbers for events before Aegon's Landing.

Dawn Age (before -12,000)

In the Dawn Age, Westeros is inhabited by the fairy-like Children of the Forest, and possibly by Giants in the far North.

ca. -12,000

The First Men come to Westeros from the eastern continent, via a land bridge then connecting the two land masses. The First Men introduce bronze, leather shields, and horses. After initial fights, which include the destruction of the land bridge, they reconcile with the Children and sign the Pact on the Isle of Faces, which brings about a four thousand year peace in Westeros. The First Men adopt the gods of the Children, the nameless gods of the forest. The fortress of Moat Cailin is built circa 10,000 years ago.

The Long Night (Age of Heroes, ca. -8000)

At the time of a terrible winter that seems to last for a generation, a demonic race called the Others invade from the north and nearly destroy all men in Westeros. The Others are finally defeated at the War for the Dawn by an alliance of men wielding fire and obsidian weapons led by a great hero, who in an eastern tradition is named 'Azor Ahai', and wields a great sword of fire, Lightbringer. This is the time when the Wall is built, a giant fortification in the north of the continent protecting the races of men from the menaces of the north. The Sworn Brotherhood of the Night's Watch is created to man and guard it. According to other legends, this is also the time when the castle of Storm's End is built in the south, and the designer of the Wall, Bran the Builder, also constructs Winterfell and becomes the first King in the North.

After ca. -8,000

The thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night's Watch is seduced by a wildling woman from beyond the Wall and becomes the Night's King, with the Watch as his personal army. The Starks in Winterfell and the King-beyond-the-Wall, Joramun, join forces to defeat the Night's King and restore honour to the Watch. This may be the same Joramun who also finds the Horn of Winter, which it is said he uses to awaken giants from the earth.

ca. -6,000

Seven holy beings appear in the Hills of Andalos on the eastern continent, apparently avatars of a supreme god. The people of the hills become their worshippers. The Andals, as they become known, invade Westeros with steel weapons and the new religion of the Faith of the Seven. They fight both the First Men and the Children of the Forest, finally extinguishing the latter everywhere south of the Wall. After centuries of fighting, the Andals establish six kingdoms in the south, while the north remains in the hands of the First Men, due in large part to the strategically located fortress of Moat Cailin resisting multiple attempts to take it and thereafter serving as the door between North and South.

ca. -5,000

The shepherds of the lands of Valyria on the eastern continent discover dragons lairing in the Fourteen Fires, a great ring of volcanoes across the neck of the Valyrian Peninsula. They tame the dragons and use them to forge a great empire, throwing down the eastern rival of Ghis in warfare five times before it finally capitulates. The Valyrian Freehold is forged.

ca. -1,700

A warrior of Dorne forges a great and powerful sword from a fallen meteorite. The sword, Dawn, becomes the greatest heirloom of House Dayne. The castle of Starfall is named for this occasion.

ca. -700

The Valyrian Freehold's slow westward expansion brings it to the lands watered by the great River Rhoyne, a vast waterway near the west coast of the eastern landmass. They destroy the city of Anar when it refuses to surrender. Nymeria, warrior-queen of the Rhoynar city-states, evacuates her people in ten thousand ships that cross the Narrow Sea and land in Dorne. Winning an alliance with Lord Mors Martell, the Rhoynar unify the fractious land under the rule of Sunspear and establish House Martell as the ruling house of Dorne. Mors adopts the Rhoynish title 'Prince' rather than 'King'. The Rhoynar bring no greater political turmoil, though the southernmost kingdoms are heavily influenced by their customs, including equal primogeniture.

ca. -500

The Valyrian Freehold conquers much of what is now the area of the southern Free Cities. A religious sect, the Moonsingers, lead many thousands of refugees north to a remote northern lagoon protected by encircling mountains and mists, and there found the Secret City of Braavos. They later build the Titan of Braavos, a great statue which also serves as defensive fortification.

ca. -200

The Valyrian Freehold annexes the island of Dragonstone in the narrow sea between the western cities and Westeros. A Valyrian noble family, the Targaryens, take control of the island.

ca. -100

The Doom of Valyria takes place. The nature of the Doom is unclear, save that heavy volcanic activity is involved. The Valyrian Peninsula is shattered and the city of Valyria is laid waste, although not completely destroyed. The dragons of Valyria are virtually wiped out. The Valyrian Freehold fractures apart. The western coastal cities become independent, naming themselves the Free Cities. Braavos reveals itself to the other cities, eventually becoming the most powerful of them through their vast fleet and economic power. The cities of Slaver's Bay become independent again, although Ghiscari power begins building again in the south. The warrior-nomads of the vast eastern plains become more emboldened by the fall of Valyria and their dominant tribe, the Dothraki, begins raiding the surrounding lands. The Targaryens remain safe on Dragonstone, the guardians of possibly the last three dragons in the western world.

1 After the Landing - The War of Conquest

Two centuries after the Doom of Valyria, Aegon Targaryen invades, subdues, and unites Westeros under his banner and constructs a new capital city at King's Landing. He is unable to conquer Dorne and allows it to remain sovereign. With the destruction of the Storm King, Argilac the Arrogant, and the death of the last King of the Reach, control of the castle of Storm's End passes to Aegon's bastard half-brother Orys Baratheon, and of Highgarden to Lord Harlen Tyrell. Edmyn Tully of Riverrun is named Lord of the Riverlands and Vickon Greyjoy of Pyke becomes Lord of the Iron Islands.

37

On Aegon's death, the Faith of the Seven revolts against the Targaryens. King Aenys assigns his brother and heir, Maegor, to deal with the crisis.

48

Death of King Maegor, the Cruel. King Jaehaerys ends the rebellion through diplomacy, promising amnesty if the Faith Militant disbands. They agree. Jaehaerys becomes known as 'The Conciliator'.

129-131

The Dance of Dragons, the first major Westerosi civil war, between Aegon II Targaryen and his half-sister Rhaenyra Targaryen for control of the Iron Throne. Many lesser branches of House Targaryen and most of their dragons are extinguished in the conflict. After Rhaenyra's death, the war continues in the name of her son, Aegon III. When Aegon II dies without issue, the war ends by default with Aegon III being crowned. The last Targaryen dragon dies during Aegon III's reign, earning him the name 'Dragonbane'. The dragon leaves behind three stone eggs, which the Targaryens fail to hatch.

157-161

The reign of King Daeron I, the Boy King, who conquers Dorne, but is unable to hold it. Forty thousand die during the war. Daeron's brother, King Baelor, makes his peace with Dorne by walking the Boneway barefoot and rescuing his cousin Aemon the Dragonknight from a viper pit.

161-171

The reign of Baelor the Blessed, septon and king. Baelor builds the Great Sept in King's Landing, which afterwards is called the Great Sept of Baelor. Baelor locks his sisters in the Maidenvault of the Red Keep so the sight of them will not tempt him to carnal thoughts. Despite this, his sister Daena the Defiant has an affair with her cousin Aegon (later Aegon IV) and gives birth to a bastard son, Daemon Blackfyre.

ca. 170

Prince Daeron, second cousin of King Baelor, and Princess Myriah Martell of Dorne are married and have their first son, Prince Baelor.

172-184

Reign of Aegon IV Targaryen, the Unworthy. On his deathbed Aegon IV legitimises his 'Great Bastards': Daemon Blackfyre, Aegor 'Bittersteel' Rivers, Brynden 'Bloodraven' Rivers and Shiera Seastar. He is succeeded by his son, King Daeron II, but his legitimacy is called into question due to his mother's close relationship with Aemon the Dragonknight.

195-196

The Blackfyre Rebellion is fought, which ends at the Battle of Redgrass Field. Daemon Blackfyre is killed by Bloodraven, but several of his sons escape to the Free Cities with Bittersteel.

197

Dorne formally joins the Seven Kingdoms through the marriage of Daeron II's sister to Prince Moran Martell.

209

The events of The Hedge Knight take place. Prince Baelor 'Breakspear' Targaryen, the heir to the throne, is killed in a tourney mishap. A few months later, King Daeron II and Baelor's two sons die in the Great Spring Sickness. Daeron II's second son, Aerys I, becomes king. Prince Baelor's nephew Aegon becomes squire to a hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, in the hope of improving his mettle.

ca. 211

The events of The Sworn Sword take place. House Webber and House Osgrey of the Reach become allies. Bloodraven has become the King's Hand by this time, angering Prince Maekar, brother to Aerys and the late Baelor.

221-233

The reign of King Maekar after Aerys dies with no issue. During Maekar's reign his eldest son Daeron dies of the pox and his second son Aerion 'Brightflame' dies after drinking wildfire. His third son, Aemon, journeys to Oldtown to become a maester. Maekar dies battling an outlaw king. Aemon refuses the crown and removes himself to the Wall. Prince Aegon becomes Aegon V, the Unlikely as he is the fourth son of a fourth son. Bloodraven is exiled to the Wall, later becoming Lord Commander.

ca. 255-260

The War of the Ninepenny Kings erupts when the Band of Nine, including Maelys Blackfyre, conquers the Free City of Tyrosh and the Stepstones before plotting an attack on the Seven Kingdoms. Ser Barristan Selmy kills Maelys. Ser Brynden Tully distinguishes himself in the war.

259-262

The Tragedy of Summerhall. The Targaryen summer palace burns down. King Aegon V and others are killed. Prince Rhaegar Targaryen is born to Aegon's grandson Prince Aerys and his sister-wife Rhaella. Jaehaerys II succeeds Aegon but dies only a few years later. Aerys II becomes king, naming the young Tywin Lannister as his Hand.

ca. 270-280

King Aerys spurns Tywin Lannister's offer of his daughter Cersei for Prince Rhaegar, instead marrying Rhaegar to Princess Elia Martell of Dorne. The Defiance of Duskendale takes place when House Darklyn refuses to pay taxes to the Iron Throne. Aerys, eager to sort out the situation himself, ends up being taken prisoner. Duskendale is besieged for six months before Ser Barristan Selmy manages to free the king. House Darklyn is destroyed and House Rykker takes over the town. It is said that it was the Defiance that began Aerys' descent into madness. Around this time Prince Rhaegar begins corresponding with Aemon Targaryen, maester of Castle Black, and ponders if he is 'The Prince Who Was Promised', who shall be reborn to fight the great darkness when it returns. Later they conclude the prince is actually Rhaegar's baby son, Aegon.

281

The Year of False Spring. Defeat of the Kingswood Brotherhood by a number of knights commanded by a detachment of the Kingsguard. Arthur Dayne kills the leader of the Brotherhood. Jaime Lannister distinguishes himself in the battle and is knighted. Lord Whent holds a great tourney at Harrenhal, where Prince Rhaegar Targaryen distinguishes himself in battle, but names Lyanna Stark of Winterfell (betrothed to Robert Baratheon) Queen of Love and Beauty rather than his own wife. Eddard Stark meets and befriends Howland Reed of Greywater Watch. Jaime becomes a member of the Kingsguard and is disinherited from being his father's heir. Tywin Lannister resigns the Handship in angry protest and returns to Casterly Rock.

282-283 - The War of the Usurper

Rhaegar Targaryen abducts Lyanna Stark from King's Landing. Lyanna's brother, Brandon Stark, and her father demand that Aerys discipline his son, but instead the Mad King kills them both. Eddard Stark, Robert Baratheon and their mentor, Jon Arryn, raise the standard of rebellion. Robert claims the throne through his descent from his great-grandfather, Aegon V Targaryen. The War of the Usurper, also called Robert's Rebellion, begins. Hoster Tully agrees to join the rebellion as well. The Tyrells remain loyal to the king and besiege Robert's castle of Storm's End, held by his brother Stannis. The Hand of the King, Jon Connington of Griffon's Roost, is defeated in the Battle of the Bells and is sent into exile in the Free Cities. The rebel army defeats the royalists at the Battle of the Trident. Prince Rhaegar is killed. The Lannisters apparently march to the aid of King Aerys, but instead turn against him and sack the city. King Aerys is killed by Jaime Lannister. Princess Elia Martell and her children, Aegon and Rhaenys Targaryen, are brutally murdered by Lannister bannermen, causing a rift between Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon. Ned Stark and Howland Reed defeat the Kingsguard holding Lyanna prisoner, only to find her dying. Ned and Robert are reconciled. Robert becomes King of Westeros, marrying Cersei Lannister. Ned returns home to Winterfell with his bastard son, Jon Snow. Loyal Targaryen retainers carry Aerys' two youngest children, Prince Viserys and Princess Daenerys, to safety in the Free Cities.

289

The Greyjoy Rebellion. Balon Greyjoy names himself King of the Iron Islands. He is defeated and two of his sons are killed. King Robert accepts his surrender and Balon's remaining son, Theon, becomes a ward and hostage of Eddard Stark.

298

The events of A Song of Ice and Fire begin. The first four novels span a period of two years or more, concluding in the year 300 AL.

Ok, if you could play any part in the TV special what would it be? Or, who could you see yourself cast as?

I need to think about this, myself.

Mysteries (probably a *SPOILERS* thread)

There are so many mysteries, and incomplete historical references, and just plain as yet unexplained things in this story. I have a bunch floating around in my head that i'm dying to read about.

My favorite is that i want to know about Howland Reed. I want to know what he's like, what he's been doing all this time, and what he did to save Ned Stark's life at the Tower of Joy - apparently he hasn't left Greywater watch since since that happened. I'm upset he didn't enter this last book.

What happened during 'The Doom' in Old Valyria?

Of course . . . Who is Jon Snow the progeny of?

There are so many more. I was curious what other ones are making you other people crazy to find out about. Or just any old thing - i'm just hoping for a kind of list here - that is still yet unknown.

Audio Book of a Feast for Crows --it so sucks.

Well, I just downloaded the new audible recording for a Feast for Crows. What a disappointment. I am used to the great work that Ray Dotrice has done with all the other Song of Ice and Fire books. John Lee reads AFFC--and its terrible. GRRM should demand his money back; fire his publisher and have a good recording produced. Makes you realize how much a good reader adds to spoken books. Sigh.

I just added the coolest painting of Dany into the gallery. It is one of a series of all the Targaryen kings (and queen) from Aegon the Conqueror to the present story that you will find in the recently pubished book, 'The Art Of George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire'.

Go check it out if you have a decent book store around.

Anyway, Dany . . . what a total hottie!

Don't read unless you've done all the books . . .

I dreamt about this last night, about actually seeing a real film/TV dramatization of the 'Red Wedding'!

Picture that! they're going to show that scene on film - the music, the bedding, Dacey Mormont being rebuked, Robb getting up and being shot, the melee, Catelyn grabbing Jinglebell, the sword into Robb, Catelyn being true to her word (and going nuts), and Lord Walder in the middle of it all.

There's so much cool stuff we're going to see - the WALL, for R'hllor's sakes! They better do it good.

Remember when Feast was being released, they did a promotional game where you could win a signed copy of the book? Of course, I'm a total geek and played it---but lost, and early too. Did anyone actually win that thing? Oh, and like the rest of youse, when will the next one come?!!!! (Yes, I read the excerpt on his site, but that only makes the addiction stronger, dammit!)

A Song of Ice and Fire on Neverwinter Nights 2

Hi!

There's a group of fans getting together to try to faithfully recreate A Song of Ice and Fire on Neverwinter Nights 2, due out in September. Neverwinter Nights has a very nice feature, allowing one to customize a module to whatever extent they are able. In other words, the limit is only on the user side, largely, rather than on the game side.

The problem we're having is finding people who can script or create custom content, or have a server available to host. Other book series out there have lots of talent, such as the Wheel of Time, which has generated two persistent worlds in NWN1, and likely 4 in NWN2. We're breaking new ground, and starting from scratch.

If anyone has these talents or resources, please check us out! If you have any questions, or just want to see what it's about and what we're up to, you're invited to our forums to see for yourself!

Our forums are located at http://soiaf.tntboards.com
I can be reached at Soiafadmin@(@)hotmail.com

See you there!

After reading the fourth novel, I am convinced that GRRM is inverting the fantasy genre. Part of me is going to be disappointed if this has a heroic ending that redeams it all. The fourth novel strikes me as deeply fatalistic, with plotlines that simply dead-end for the characters involved. I appreciate this a lot, it shows a mastery of craft that I feel like Song of Ice and Fire both fulfills the genre better than any other I have read, and complete disrupts its base assumptions about heroism, good verses evil, honor, etc. Thoughts?

in AFFC Brienne is hanged. I just can't believe that she is dead. I think it's possible that she was cut down at the last minute. I just gotta think she is playing a key role throughout the book. She is one of the only honorable characters that is a key player. Also, I think she and Jaime will hook up in the end. . .although I could see it being a tragic love affair as well.

What do you think?

Other George RR Martin?

Am I the only one who's a fan of Martin's other works?

My next favorite beyond ASoIaF is easily _The Armageddon Rag_, and his first collection of short stories _A Song for Lya_. Also way up there is _Fevre Dream_.

And, as my first introduction to him, _Windhaven_ will always be a sentimental favorite.

I'll admit, though, I'm not a big fan of the Wildcards series he edited.

Anyone else care to chime in?

Predictions???

Loved AFFC. Some wild guesses for the upcoming books. . .

Cersei, after her champion wins the upcoming trial by combat, continues to do evil deeds in the kingdom. The marriage is annulled, leaving Tommen unmarried and the Tyrell's leave for High Garden to fight off the seaborne invaders.

Jaimie, who is also Cersei's younger brother, will end up killing her and will become the King's hand. Brienne rescues Sansa and kills the evil Littlefinger, takes her to King's Landing for protection. Jaimie marrys Brienne, realizing she is the best and truest woman he has ever known.

Arrya will regain her vision, receive her training, but will find all the names on her list have already died, except Jaimie. Sansa will convince Arrya to spare him. Sansa will marry Ser Loras, although he has been terribly scarred.

Meanwhile, the Others will breach the wall and fight a battle with Stannis' armies who will all become Others! Jon Snow will lead the remainder of the Night Watch to King's Landing to seek swords of valyrian steel and obsidian blades both of which will be effective against the Others, but it is not enough.

The High Septon will lead the sparrow armies out to battle the Others but they will mostly all become Others. The army of Others is now huge. Thoros discovers that the Others cannot infect those who have died and been resurrected so they create an army of the reborn! Valiant knights offer to be slain in order to be reborn.

An epic battle with Sparrows, Night Watch and Reborn battle the Others. Jaimie and Brienne will die in combat, but at least in love. Their bodies will be torched to save them from the Others.

At the end, Daeny's will save the day with her dragons, who will burn all the Others. Tommen will abdicate so that she can reign and she will marry Jon Snow, who has disbanded the Night Watch as the Others have been destroyed. Tommen will become a successful breeder of cats. Samwell becomes the maester to the Queen and King.

Also, Bran will learn to fly and will lead the dire wolf armies against the invading armies of the drowned men. Ummm, Tyrion. . .he will enter a very special convent and will have both his carnal and his spiritual needs met, never to be involved in the affairs of the kingdom again.

Myrcella emerges from her wounds with an evil heart and finds Tommen, with whom she becomes lovers. The series ends with her plotting revenge, thus setting up the second series, "A Song of Wind and Mud!"

Some crazy ideas here, but it was fun to conjure up. Any other wild ideas?

If, like me, you are interested in understanding all the details or who is who and what is what - with all them damn hundreds of names - as you re-read the books you might want to take some time browsing through this heraldry. It tells a lot of history and who from each house have played what role in the story (up through aSoS, and the two Hedge Knight stories - yes, Duncan the Tall is there!) with nice little brief synopses. Also, the cool designs of the different house heraldry help as a retainer of all the information.

The rest of the site is neat, but this heraldry stuff is my favorite part.

here's the site:http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/Heraldry/

I'm reading this book slowly; relishing it. I've never hated anyone so much as I hate Cersei. She is worse than Joff... but that makes sense, she is what he came from. I hope she gets the "Goat treatment".

I just got back from a book signing with George RR Martin for Feast. He spoke for about an hour. It was great. He has a great sense of humor. It felt conversational and comfortable. He was likeable witha bit of a jolliness I didn't expect. If anyone gets the chance to see him in person go you won't regret it.

So, when A Dance With Dragons (I think that's the title) comes out, I'll read that through. Duh.

But, future readings will have me alternating between books, one chapter at a time, unless there are some crossover characters, in which case I'll just have to try and figure out what I'm doing.

I hope I'll be able to do so. Should be fun.

Just a quick note for all the new people in this TRIBE...

PLEASE, out of courtesy for those that haven't read certain books, etc., PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add a spoiler warning either to your title or at the beginning of your post or both, and don't spoil anything in your post titles.

We all love these books and we can't wait to talk about them, read them, dance with them, hold them close...uh...and stuff... but some are just starting out and some read slower than others, and we want them to have the same great experience we had. And if you had a bad experience before, please help fix the problem.

As the moderator, I simply ask for courtesy. I've been running this TRIBE since TRIBE first started, and many of you have been here with me.

Let's take care of our own.

Good reading,
Captain of the Guards Excerpt

Martin is doing a book signing here in San Francisco, at the Booksmith on Haight St, and they are handing out these little 20 page excerpts of one of the chapters - we haven't seen on his website - from Feast. It's called the Captain of the Guards excerpt and the POV is the (can you guess?) Captain of the Guards . . . . . . for . . . . . . the Prince of Dorne, Doran Martell. You know, the Viper's brother. You know, after what happened at King's Landing.

Anyway, big deal, but i just thought i'd get y'all thinking about things to come, and get you worked up and itchy.

When the book comes out I hope when people talk about it, they will give a spoiler warning. I know I will be eager to talk about what is going on, but I fell I read a bit slower than average and do not wish to learn something prematurly in discusion.

Hey everybody,

Since there seemed to be a want for discussion, I'm going to start several new listings each with a "spoilers" tag, so that we can talk freely about the books and what we think, and hopefully people won't jump in and find out things they don't want to know... and if they do, they've been warned.

This one is for folks who have read all the books, etc. to discuss stuff.

Enjoy!

Celebrating the Book Release

So, is anyone going to throw a AFFC release party?

Or how about this: I am planning on taking off work November 8 and 9 (or Nov 9 and 10) to read the new book. I am sure that some of you are doing the same thing. If we can't physically get together-- how about we start a topics on this post board where we type entries as we are reading? That way we can discuss as we go. We could set the topics up like:

SPOILERS Reading AFFC Pages 1-200
SPOILERS Reading AFFC Pages 200-400

Etc., so that once you have finished a block of the book, you can stop and talk about it with other people who are reading and have finished the section you just read?

I really need more of a life, I know. But this sounds like fun. I don't have anyone else in my life who wants to talk about this series and I know I will want to discuss as I am reading. What do you guys think?

Times like these I wish I still worked in a book store so I could try and get an advance copy... So it goes...

with the breakup of the the next period of story-time into the two seperate areas of world - Westeros in FfC, and the Eastern Lands and the Wall and beyond (it seems) in DoD - there are bound to be some new POV's added that weren't there previously.

Who will the players be in Feast? I think Brienne for sure. And we know Cersei is a new POV. Someone down in Sunspear? Maybe Myrcella? Or a Tyrell?

AFFC Done! ... in the worst possible way

http://www.georgerrmartin.com/done.html

So the book is finished, and that's great news :) Unfortunately, due to publication constraints, "The focus in FEAST will be on Westeros, King's Landing, the riverlands, Dorne, and the Iron Islands. More than that I won't say." So no Dany chapters, no Jon chapters, probably no Arya or Tyrion, maybe no Sansa? These other POVs will be moved into A Dance with Dragons. On the bright side, ADwD is half done, but knowing how George likes to tell a story, I wonder how he is going to include the rest of what he planned to tell in that book without running into the same problem as he did with Feast... Perhaps he'll move most of what he was going to tell in that book into yet another future book. He did say that there will now be 7 books in the series, so it's possible that ADwD could be more or less only those chapters that were too big for Feast, but maybe not...

So, AFFC should be out this fall. A firm publication date should be showing up on GRRM's website once it is set. Then we get to see how much more he needs/wants to add to ADwD and wait a while longer before we can hear about those other characters.

BTW How far is everyone into the series?

I've finished AGoT, ACoK, ASoS, the Martin website preview chapter, and the paperback ASoS preview chapter. But I still need to read Arms of the Kraken (a preview novella published in Dragon magazine).

Last night I noticed that the main page on georgerrmartin.com is blank. Viewing the source shows that it only has some basic html headers up at the moment, and you can enter other pages on the site (http://www.georgerrmartin.com/nextbook.html still has the 1/17/15 announcement) if you know the urls or google them. What awaits us when it comes back up? Site redesign? Book announcement? Both? Somehow I think I'll be checking the site more often now than I used to...

Re-reading the books (how many reads have you done)

I'm finding the second read through even more enjoyable then the first one. I'm cacthing more things that must've slipped by in times when I was too tired to read but read anyways. :)

Some of the characters are gaining more "life" in my mind, and the more I go into it, the more I think that there is depth in the character development that I have never seen in other books.

So yah, how many times did you read these books? Did you find the 3rd time to be as enjoyable? more??? With the 4th book still not here, I think I might have to read them a 3rd time.

Can we get the 4th book damnit? :)

Favorite fight/disputebetween characters SPOILER**

I was wondering what ya'lls fav battle between characters is for each book. What is not acceptable is simply saying, "The battle of Blackwater Bay".

So for me In a GOT my favorite battle is Gregor and Sandors battle after Loras bested Gregor. For those who dont remember when Gregor falls off he gets pissed and basically cheats and knocks Loras Tyrell of his horse and the hound jumps in to save him. It is awsome in that battle how gregor keeps swinging at Sandor like he means to kill him and Sandor basically kind of backs off and defends. Very interesting character dynamic and also. In the next book I hope Gregor and the hounds relationships are opened up a bit.
In a COK I like the dispute between Davos and Mellisandre. This dispute is even in the beggining when Cressen tries to kill her with the poison and escalates when Davos takes Melissandre to kil Renly. I think that Davos is awsome for standing up to a hard-ass like Stannis.

The Song of Ice and Fire 'Game of Thrones' board game is awesome! Me and three friends gathered to play/learn it last night. We only got so far in it because it got too late, but once we got the hang of it (it took about an hour, though having studied the rules beforehand) it was fucking fun! Already we're dying for the supplements that are due out to expand the game even BIGGER!

I finally got my hands on a copy of the Dragon Magazine with the Arms fo the Kraken novella inside. Wow. As the title suggests it's focused mostly who will succeed Balon to the Seastone throne, Victarion, Asha or Euron Crow's Eye. And of course when I finished it I wanted more, more and MORE! Dammit GRRM, finish this sucker. The events of the last few paragraphs will have an effect on one of our favorite protagonists, Daenerys.

I read somewhere that this text will be part of a huge prologue in AFfC. So you won't miss anything vital if you can't find this issue while waiting for AFfC to be finally published.

Book 4 and beyond . . .

**WARNING! Don't read this unless you've finished 'Storm of Swords'**

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Things to look forward to or think about in Feast for Crows, and further . . .

~~REVENGE AGAINST THE FREYS! Hoping Maege Mormont will play a big part in it. She is a cool character. Also, the Greatjon is still alive - in captivity. He's gotta be pissed . . .
~~Also the damn traitor Bolton (and more stuff about his bastard, for sure . . .)

~~Will any of Roberts blood be players? Gendry? Edrick? Mya Stone?

~~I think Tyrion will be true to his promise to the Mountain Clans (a Lannister always keeps his word), that he will help them win the Vale of Arryn. And something even more huge in the future; Maester Aemon prophesied that Tyrion was "a Giant come among us, at the end of the world."

~~Samwell Tarly . . . I think he will become extremely important to the Night's Watch. Find something in all the ancient writings in the bowels of Castle Black. Maybe he will become a Maester and replace Aemon? or something like that.

~~Hinting talk of the Shadow Lands, beyond Asshai. I bet they will be visited by someone - Daenerys . . . Arya?

~~looking forward to the continuing evolution of Jaime's character. I bet he does some cool stuff, really changes in a neat way.

~~ Brienne, and her quest to help Sansa . . . that is one of the most open-ended guesses (Littlefinger!) as to what's going to happen, i think. Except for Bran . . ?

~~Riverrun. Brynden Tully (the Blackfish) still holds it, and Robb's wife/queen is still there. I think she may have some interesting part to play - something in her lineage of a psychic or witchlike power in the women, vaguely alluded to . . .

What else?

SOME SPOILERS: Who Re-Reads and Why is ASoIaF such a good re-read?

I consider myself a pretty savvy fantasy reader. I have made my way through Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time Epics without feeling the need to re-fresh by re-reading any of the previous books (although years and years have passed since I began that endless journey). I just figure I will pick things up in the next book as I need to know them. Same with every other of the hundreds of fantasy series I have read.

But ASoIaF is different. I reread these books everytime a new one comes out. And I am currently re-reading them all, even though I know I will have to re-read them again when AFoC is out. I just like rereading them.

And I went to the theater a few months ago (Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach, CA) and saw a guy reading Clash of Kings in the box office. As always when I see someone reading the series, I started jumping up and down, pointing at the book and screeching "I love those books!" over and over until he put the book down to talk me about it. The friend I was with pulled me away from the box office window so we didn't hold up the box office line- but I wanted to stand there all and day and talk to the guy. And he said he does the same thing I do with the re-reading. He was reading the whole series thinking that AFoC would be out soon. (Hurry, George, hurry!)

When the new book comes out I am planning on taking 3 days off work three days before the day AFoCs is released to read the three previous books. And then I will read AFoCs a little more slowly over the next few weeks (If I can force myself to do that- more likely I will take another day or two off work and read it in an obsessive marathon fashion) Is that sick or what? But I enjoy immersing myself in this series more than I enjoy taking family vacations (and a lot more than I enjoy work.)

Are there other obessive re-readers out there with stories of missed work, and long transfixed all-night reads?

I think I re-read it out of fear that there is going to be a half-phrase in the next book that references something in the previous books that I don't remember. And in a weird way I feel like my rapt attention is somehow (supernaturally) going to affect the outcome of the story. I am somehow convinced that if I had just paid closer attention and knew more about what was going on the Rains of Castamere would not have fallen, if you get the reference, for instance. Somehow I could have saved everyone if I had been a more informed reader. Totally irrational. But I think that is part of the pull that draws me into the book. That and fact that it feels so real to me on some level-- I feel like there really is a nasty, cruelly complex, dangerous war going on and I should educate myself as much as possible for my own safety. If only the war in Iraq was so compelling!

Anyone else feel this way?

Help - Martin Info

I'm doing my Masters on Fantasy Lit and my thesis is showing the evolution of modern High Fantasy using Tolkien and Martin for a comparison. Does anyone know of any good links (or books, mags, etc.) that provide biographical info or literary criticism of Martin. Of course there is a ton of info on Tolkien, but I'm finding it hard to dig up any 'serious' scholarly secondary sources on Martin. I'd appreciate any links or tips. Thanks.

The Legends collections are short novels (or long short stories)in the universes of various writers. Both of them have stories by Martin that take place in Westeros, but about 100 years (maybe more) before the events in A Game of Thrones.

Good stories in general, very interesting to read about some of the history, and see how things developed in the later books.
