Daenerys . . . what a babe.

I just added the coolest painting of Dany into the gallery. It is one of a series of all the Targaryen kings (and queen) from Aegon the Conqueror to the present story that you will find in the recently pubished book, 'The Art Of George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire'.

Go check it out if you have a decent book store around.

Anyway, Dany . . . what a total hottie!

    Yeah, too bad she's jail-bait. :P

That whole thing kind of squicked me out. She's finally starting to get old enough now where it's not as squicky, but for a while there...

I get the impression that that isn't much of a real issue in Martin's world.

Or, really, anywhere or anywhen except modern Christianity-influenced society. Adulthood is an arbitrary distinction defined by society, and that distinction used to be applied at puberty for most cultures.

Or it could just be the fact that I'm a parent with a daughter. *shrug*

A *modern* parent with a daughter. In Medieval times you might well have arranged for her to be married by age 16 or younger.

Sure, I very well might have, and there are religious sects in the U.S. in 2006 who still marry off their 13 year old girls to much older men. While I understand it's a cultural thing, that doesn't mean I have to think it's right.

So I guess I'll further clarify: Since I'm a modern-day woman born in Los Angeles, and especially since I have a daughter of my own, the thought of a 13 year old girl being married off to an older man squicks me out a little.

Meghan, i've never heard the term squicky before. Is that in common usage, or your own thing? I like it.

                  Ah, well . . . squick:

                  # This is not an acronym. Squick means to be so repulsed by something that it would cause an immediate safeword.

                  # a verb meaning to cause unease or feelings of revulsion, most often applied to a reader's reaction to a specific scenario, derived from the word "squeamish" and the slang term "icky." A reader may be squicked by certain genres of fic, such as slash, or by a fic containing certain elements, such as depictions of torture or unusual sexual practices.

                  # Anything that upsets, disturbs, or grosses a person out is a squick. If something squicks you, it upsets and disgusts you. Some people are squicked by adultfic or other things.

                  # The term Squick was introduced in the Usenet newsgroup alt.sex.bondage in the early 90's to refer to an otherwise unremarkable act that crossed your own personal boundaries in an extreme fashion. It was then propagated to the newsgroup alt.tasteless where it took on the derivative meaning of having sex with an artificially created orifice in a (recently) living person's skull.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and by the way, if anyone wants to read a little squicky thing . . .

                  'The Icky-Squicky Spider'

                  >>She stopped at the tip of her Mistress' abdomen, where a new organ had sprouted inside the ring of spinnerets: a long, pale tube, curving upward to a height of about two feet. The puppet-strings in her head jerked again, and she straddled the tube and bore down. Reward came instantly: a gush of cool bubbles and her first scrap of drone awareness. The latter was just enough to explain the former: the Queen was laying eggs.<<

Ah, I see you looked it up - nope, not my own word - just a holdover from years of usenet. :) It's a great word for that "eeewww" feeling!

My next goal is to re-introduce the word "smurfy" to the masses.

I once told someone I was dating that I was going to Smurf her all night long.... I wonder why she left?
